We Need To Stop Segregating The World

By Cody Schultz on January 21, 2018

Something has been bothering me a bit lately, and I feel as though I need to get it off my chest before it becomes too much to handle.

As I was walking around the store with my mom the other day, I kept noticing labels on toys which determined them to be for boys or for girls. Normally, this sort of thing would not at all bother me; I would walk away from the sign and continue on with my day. But this time, it hit a nerve. It angered me.

stop with labels

We need to stop segregating the world if we plan on having a peaceful future.

The human species has been on this earth for over two-thousand years, evolving and creating in order to become what we are today. Looking back, however, we can see that there really have not been many changes.

From a technical standpoint, Leonardo Da Vinci would be blown away if he were to come back from the dead. Then again, if there were people coming back from the dead, we would have worse things on our hands than a confused scientist from the 1400s. Since the dawn of time, we have been labeling ourselves – and others – effectively segregating the world.

Okay, I understand why we label ourselves. Especially when it comes to gender, I get that we sort of need that for science. There are diseases that only affect the female body and ones that only affect the male body, and we need some sort of way to distinguish the number of people who may be affected by said disease. I suppose the same can be said for race, although that would be a bit of a push.

Regardless, outside of science and medication, why must we allow ourselves to be labeled?

What does it matter if I am white? Black. Asian?

Does it mean anything to you if I am homosexual? Bisexual. Asexual?

Is your life affected any differently if I am male? Female. Genderfluid?

Yes, we use labels to distinguish who we are and better understand ourselves, but, again, why must we use them outside of science and medication. If it means nothing to you what I label myself as, why must I label myself at all?

We are in 2018 now – there should be no reason for the Black Lives Matters or LGBTQ movements. Their messages should live on inside all of us. Every one of us needs to realize that we are human before we are anything else. If there is any major dream that I have for the world, I hope that we can one day come together and stop the fighting. Stop the labeling. Stop segregating the world. Simply put:

Stop the nonsense.

Instead of judging people for what they do in their free-time, stop and think to yourself, “does this have any adverse effect on my personal life?” If the answer is “no” – which it will be 9/10 times – then shut your mouth and move on.
